
The story is set across a dozen or so themed kingdoms – a forest, a land of ice, a bustling city – each of which acts as a small open world teeming with things to see and do. But in order to travel to each kingdom Mario needs to power up a ship – the eponymous Odyssey – using Power Moons. Hundreds of these glowing collectibles are scattered across the kingdoms, and the bulk of the game is spent in search of them.

We can toss it to break bricks and stun enemies, or fling it in front of Mario to act as a kind of trampoline to jump a bit higher. Some hat actions – such as throwing it out in an expanding spiral to damage areas all around Mario – require some physical shaking movements, which at first I was a bit concerned about. But any actions based on motion control are entirely optional. Indeed, Mario has such a huge range of traditional abilities and moves – rolls, backward flips, triple jumps, side summersaults, and more – that you can easily get away with using motion-enabled moves only occasionally if you prefer. The game’s only outright failure, if it might be called such, is its two-player cooperative mode, which sees a second player taking control of Mario’s hat. Playing as a twosome enables some new and helpful abilities, making it easier to jump higher or reach out to latch onto and possess a Cheep Cheep or Shy Guy, but in some areas it also requires players to communicate with each other and time their actions.

And outside these situations it’s far too easy for the player controlling the hat to interfere with what the player controlling Mario wants to do, resulting in frustration. Neither my daughter nor I have enjoyed playing cooperatively for longer than 10 or 15 minutes at a time.īut if that’s the worst complaint to be levelled at Super Mario Odyssey, it’s in pretty good shape.
